More Mapping Options from Google

Google released some more updates to their mapping software.

Google Maps offers Satellite Views

You can now get satellite imagery at Google Maps. Here’s a very green and mountainous aerial view of the Acme Technologies office.

Google Maps excels over MapQuest and Yahoo! Maps by offering real-time scrolling and updates. Unlike the other services which require you to keep reloading the web page to change resolution or move around, Google Maps can pan and zoom without page reloads.

Google Labs Ride Finder

For selected major cities, you can watch taxis and shuttle busses moving around on a map. Here’s the New York City view which presently tracks SuperShuttle. Google Ride Finder

Tracking in Ride Finder is handled through GPS through a variety of technology providers, including Mobile Knowledge, Tranware and Vettro. The San Jose map shows Yellow Cab and Check Cab vehicles, but I can’t imagine how they could possibly show all the cabs in New York City on a small map when you commonly see ten cabs sitting at a single traffic light in midtown.
